You pick up your teen's aligners from the bathroom counter and hold them to the light. When they were new you could barely see them. Now they look frosted, with a faint white crust along the edges and a smell you would rather not think about. They have been brushed, sort of. With toothpaste, which it turns out was part of the problem.
Cloudy, smelly aligners are one of the most common questions parents ask during clear aligner treatment, and the fix is usually simple. To clean Invisalign, rinse the aligners every time they come out, brush them gently morning and night with a soft brush and mild clear soap in cool or lukewarm water, and soak them regularly to loosen film and mineral buildup. What keeps them clear is mostly what you leave out: toothpaste, heat and harsh chemicals. Here is the full routine and why each step matters.
How do you clean Invisalign aligners every day?
Aligners spend most of the day pressed against the teeth and bathed in saliva, which makes them a surface where plaque can grow just as it does on enamel. Daily cleaning is about removing that film before it has a chance to harden or start to smell.
Rinse whenever they come out
Run them under cool or lukewarm water as soon as you remove them. Saliva and plaque come off much more easily before they dry onto the plastic.
Brush gently with soap, not toothpaste
Use a soft toothbrush kept only for the aligners and a drop of mild, clear, unscented soap. Brush inside and out with light pressure, paying attention to the tooth-shaped cups where plaque collects.
Rinse thoroughly
Soap residue tastes bad and can irritate the mouth, so rinse until the plastic no longer feels slippery.
Clean your own teeth before putting them back
Brush, or at least rinse well with water, before reinserting. Aligners seal food and sugar against the enamel, where saliva cannot reach to wash it away.
Store them in the case
When aligners are out of the mouth, they belong in their ventilated case, not in a napkin, a pocket or loose in a backpack.
Dyed dish soaps and colored mouthwashes can tint clear plastic over time. A clear, fragrance-free liquid soap is the safest choice for the daily brush.
Why do Invisalign aligners get cloudy or start to smell?
Cloudiness usually has one of a few causes, and they look slightly different. Knowing which one you are dealing with tells you how to clean it.
| What you see | What's causing it | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| A hazy, frosted look that does not wipe off | Fine scratches from toothpaste abrasives or a stiff brush. Scratches scatter light and give bacteria places to grip. | Switch to soap and a soft brush. Scratches cannot be polished out at home, so prevention matters. |
| White, chalky or crusty deposits, especially along edges | Minerals from saliva, mostly calcium phosphate, building up on the plastic, much as tartar forms on teeth | A soak in an aligner cleaner or diluted white vinegar helps dissolve it |
| A slimy film and an unpleasant smell | Plaque and bacteria that have not been fully brushed off, sometimes combined with a dry mouth overnight | More consistent brushing, plus a soak |
| Yellow or brown tint | Coffee, tea, soda, juice or colored sports drinks consumed while wearing the aligners | Take aligners out for anything but plain water |
| Cloudy, slightly misshapen plastic | Heat. Hot water, a dishwasher or a car in the sun can soften and distort the plastic. | Replace or ask the orthodontist; warped aligners may no longer fit correctly |
The smell deserves a word, because it is often what bothers teens most. The same bacteria that cause bad breath live in the film on aligners. Because each tray sits over the teeth for hours with little saliva flowing across it, those bacteria have an easy time. A thorough daily brush, a regular soak and clean teeth underneath usually take care of it.
How do you deep clean Invisalign?
A soak loosens what brushing alone leaves behind. Many people do it daily with a gentle product while they eat breakfast, or at least a few times a week. Brush first, then soak, then brush lightly and rinse again.
Each new set of aligners is usually worn for one to two weeks before switching to the next, so a tray does not need to last forever. That is also why a set that has turned badly cloudy late in its cycle is not a crisis. The habits matter more for the next tray than for rescuing the current one.
What should you avoid when cleaning Invisalign?
Most aligner damage comes from well-meant cleaning. These are the common ones:
- Cool or lukewarm water
- A soft toothbrush kept only for the aligners
- Mild, clear, unscented soap
- Aligner cleaning products used as directed
- Short soaks in diluted white vinegar or baking soda
- The case, kept away from heat
- Hot or boiling water, dishwashers and microwaves
- Toothpaste, which is abrasive enough to scratch clear plastic
- Bleach, which can degrade the plastic
- Alcohol-based or strongly colored mouthwash as a soak
- Stiff brushes or scouring pads
- Leaving them in a hot car or wrapped in a napkin
Pets deserve a mention. Dogs in particular seem drawn to aligners, probably because of the smell of saliva, and a chewed tray usually needs replacing. A closed case on a high shelf solves it.
How do you keep Invisalign and teeth clean during the day?
Clear aligners are typically worn for most of the day, commonly 20 to 22 hours, which means they cover the teeth through school, sports and sleep. That makes what happens during the short breaks important, both for the aligners and for the teeth underneath them.
If your teen also has a retainer from earlier treatment or will move to one afterward, retainers have their own care routine, which we cover in a separate guide to cleaning retainers.
For parents juggling school, sports and appointments, a quick way to ask a question helps. OneOral membership includes messaging with licensed dentists, which can help with between-visit questions such as whether a sore spot or a chalky patch on a tooth can wait. It works alongside your orthodontist between adjustments, not in place of them.
Call if an aligner is cracked, warped, no longer seats fully, or has a sharp edge. Do not force a distorted tray into place. Get in touch about sore spots that do not settle within a few days, or mouth irritation after using a cleaning product. Facial swelling, fever or severe tooth pain needs prompt dental or urgent care.
