Cavity Risk
Assessment

Cavities aren't random. They're the predictable result of specific biological conditions — most of which can be measured, managed, and reversed.

Of Cavities Are Preventable

Nine in ten cavities are preventable through active management of three root causes: acid-producing bacteria, fermentable carbohydrates, and susceptible tooth surfaces. Remove any one and cavities cannot form.

Why cavities happen

A cavity requires three things to form: acid-producing bacteria (primarily Streptococcus mutans), a fermentable carbohydrate source for those bacteria to consume, and a susceptible tooth surface. Remove any one of the three and cavities cannot form.

Most dental care addresses only the tooth surface — cleaning it, sealing it, drilling it when it fails. The OneOral protocol attacks the bacterial population and oral pH directly, addressing the root cause rather than the symptom.

Key risk factors

01

Diet high in sugar or refined carbs

Fermentable carbohydrates are the primary fuel source for S. mutans. Frequency matters more than quantity — constant snacking keeps oral pH perpetually low.

02

Dry mouth (xerostomia)

Saliva is your mouth's natural defense system. It neutralizes acid, delivers calcium and phosphate, and contains antimicrobial proteins. Reduced salivary flow dramatically increases cavity risk.

03

Acidic beverage consumption

Coffee, soda, sports drinks, and fruit juice directly acidify your oral environment, independently of bacteria. Diet sodas are still acidic.

04

Poor oral hygiene

Infrequent brushing and flossing allows biofilm to mature into plaque — a structured bacterial colony that's far more resistant to disruption.

05

Previous cavity history

Having had cavities is the single strongest predictor of future cavities. It indicates an established high-risk bacterial population that requires active intervention.

06

Certain medications

Antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and many others reduce salivary flow as a side effect.

07

Deep pits and fissures

Anatomy matters. Deep grooves in molars trap bacteria and are impossible to clean with a toothbrush.

Levels & recommendations

Low riskNo cavities in the past 3 years, good oral hygiene, healthy diet, adequate saliva.

Recommended: Continue current routine. Standard prevention is sufficient.

Moderate risk1–2 cavities in the past 3 years, or 2+ risk factors present.

Recommended: Add therapeutic xylitol and consider fluoride supplementation.

High risk3+ cavities in the past 3 years, dry mouth, or active decay present.

Recommended: Requires active treatment protocol. The OneOral Treatment Kit is designed for this group.
